The Park Street School Elementary Orchestra was on hand to perform and to accept the $20,000 Community Impact Grant from Community Foundation on behalf of the school. The Orchestra is available to any student in the school who wishes to join and it performs throughout the community, as a service to the public, at seniors’ homes, group homes and community events. Every student in the orchestra learns basic skills on an instrument, how to read music and how to work collaboratively within an ensemble.
The project will also have a technology component for students who wish to learn about recording, sound and video production. These students will record the performances of the orchestra and create a documentary that will be shared with the community.
“Students will learn about the service component of giving back to the community”, says music teacher, Jeff Zaat, who donates his time to lead the orchestra. “Students will be given log books to document their experiences and their learning, helping them to understand the impact that they are having on people’s lives through their music.”
The 2014 Impact Grant will be used to fund the purchase of additional musical instruments, upkeep of instruments, transportation to and from concerts, sound and video technology and sponsorship of children who otherwise could not afford to participate in the orchestra. Indeed, the school wants to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate regardless of their financial situation.
This program is a wonderful opportunity to teach children about social responsibility and how they can use their talents to create a positive impact on their community; all while the children also learn to play an instrument and gain confidence in themselves through music and performance.
