LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
If you want to help the community, leave it to us - March 8, 2013
Bill Wren’s response to, “What good is a million dollars?” raised some great questions.
With 85,000 registered charities in Canada, it truly is hard to determine where the greatest need is, what non-profit to support, and how to balance immediate needs with long term needs.
In fact, it might just be too much to expect from an individual who has money to donate, whether it be $1 million or $20.
That’s where the Fredericton Community Foundation (FCF) comes in. The FCF can help donors identify how they would like to see their money used. For donors whose goal is to support important causes in our community, our knowledgeable grants committee does the analysis to ensure that funds are used to address a broad spectrum of community needs - arts and culture, health, environment, education, youth recreation and sport, heritage, and social development.
Similarly, for donors who wish to select an area of interest (Bill suggested poverty, literacy and animal welfare), FCF could set up a fund that focused on those areas and disbursed to projects in this field annually, again based on where the need is each year.
FCF can even help a donor with their thoughts around balancing the needs of today with the needs of the future. Our endowed funds generate income to support the causes that matter to the donor. With options around endowment length, this ensures that good work in our community can be funded not only today, but long into the future, while satisfying the wishes of the donor.
With so many options available to them, donors like Bill can be assured that their money is going where it is needed, to an organization that will use it wisely, for both short term and long term solutions, and have peace of mind in knowing that the impact is being monitored by the Fredericton Community Foundation.
