The Creed-Beattie Story
Enid Beattie loved Fredericton. No one would contest that statement. While her life saw her reside in different locations in both New Brunswick and Quebec, she started her life here and this is where she found her final resting place.
Enid was an only child, born in 1914 to a father who was a civil servant and a mother who was a teacher. Following in her mother’s footsteps she attended Teacher’s College receiving a one year certificate and continuing her studies at both the University of NB and Acadia University where she received a BA Degree. Her life plans changed once she met her first husband who was a farmer. Leaving the teaching profession behind for a period, she became a traditional farmer’s wife until her husband passed away at a young age.
As a young widow, Enid returned to her profession of teaching and found herself in Campbellton and later in Quebec. It was here she met her second husband, Keith Beattie. In the early 1970’s Enid and her husband returned to Fredericton. Following his passing, she moved to Windsor Court where she lived the remainder of her life until her passing at age 97.
Enid lived a full life and wanted to do two things. When her mother passed, she left Enid a sum of money. It was her mother’s wish that, upon Enid’s passing, that money would go to help those in Fredericton who might be in need. Additionally, Enid wanted to give back to her beloved community of Fredericton.
Being a friend of Alden Clark, she had an intimate knowledge of the work the Foundation does. Knowing that both she and her mother wanted to give back to Fredericton, she chose the Foundation as a way to leave her family legacy behind. Enid made a very generous bequest to the Foundation to establish the Creed-Beattie Fund (a Field of Interest Fund). Her wish was that the disbursements be used to support educational and cultural purposes (excluding sports). Her rational for excluding sports was simply that she was never very good at sports.
Enid’s generosity of leaving a bequest to the Foundation will ensure that the legacy of her family will continue for many years to come. She did indeed build a legacy that will definitely enhance lives.
