2013 Impact Grant Recipient: Para NB – Sport & Recreation (Equipment Loan Program)
February, 2013 Update from Para NB
Para NB – Sport & Recreation received the 2013 Impact Grant from the Fredericton Community Foundation and is putting that $20,000 grant to good use, purchasing specialized adapted sport and recreation equipment that will be made available to persons with a physical disability in the Greater Fredericton area. Lack of access to proper equipment is a major barrier to participation in sport and recreational activities for persons with a physical disability, so Para NB is addressing this need by developing The Para NB Equipment Loan Service.
While the Impact Grant will be used specifically to fund the purchase of equipment for use in Greater Fredericton and will be part of this service for individuals, families, schools and recreation or sport programs to request to loan, it is exciting to know that the Fredericton Community Foundation’s grant has also helped Para NB to leverage additional support. The Department of Healthy & Inclusive Communities has provided significant funding to the Para NB Equipment Loan Service ensuring that it will provide equipment to all regions of the Province!
In addition, with funding support from the Department of Healthy & Inclusive Communities, Para NB is hiring a part-time Equipment Loan Service Coordinator to oversee the development, delivery and evaluation of the service.
In the past couple months, Para NB has collected quotes from numerous equipment suppliers, worked with sport and recreation groups to identify equipment needs, gathered recommendations on equipment specifications and are in the process of purchasing equipment and devices. Equipment purchased as a result of the Impact Grant will include boccia ramps, boccia sets, hand cycles, hockey sledges, bowling ramps and curling sticks. The development of this loan service will greatly enhance the ability of individuals, groups and organizations to engage in para sport and recreation ensuring access to the right equipment and the opportunity to have positive experiences. Para NB looks forward to launching the Para NB Equipment Loan Service by June 2013!
Para NB invites everyone to be a part of a Para NB Experience on March 16th! The event will be held at the CFB Gagetown recreation centre from 1 pm -4 pm. Experience a variety of interactive sport stations and mini clinics, try equipment and learn more about para sports and activities like wheelchair rugby, boccia and goalball!
November 2012 – This is what Para NB has to say about their program and the 2013 Impact Grant:
Para NB – Sport & Recreation is a new program in New Brunswick. It is a partnership of Ability NB, Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic, Recreation NB and Sport NB. The Para NB – Sport & Recreation program involves working with persons with a physical disability, Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs), disability organizations, recreation organizations and facilities to build capacity and lead the development and coordination of a system that engages New Brunswickers with physical disabilities in para sport and recreation.
Our primary target populations are New Brunswickers with a physical disability, sport and recreation organizations, and leaders and coaches.
Our impact grant project objective is to develop a loan system to provide specialized para sport equipment to individuals, families, schools and recreation or sport programs in the Fredericton area. Equipment and devices will include multi-purpose sport chairs for wheelchair tennis, basketball, curling and rugby; boccia ramps; curling sticks and hockey sledges. This service will ensure individuals with a physical disability who participate in sport and recreation have access to the right equipment.
It will also ensure they have a positive experience and have the freedom and access to explore various sport and recreation opportunities. Ultimately this service will increase physical activity rates and contribute to a healthier community.
This is an environmentally friendly service that will ensure that specialized equipment is recycled, maintained and loaned in an effective and efficient way. Para NB will work closely with our sport, recreation and disability organizations, recreation facilities and other partner groups to leverage equipment and promote the service.
We expect our unique project to have significant community impact including participants experiencing increased success with activities, higher quality clinics offered and increased number of positive experiences in para sport and recreation. We thank the Fredericton Community Foundation and it’s donors for their support and we look forward to the success of this project!
