The Fredericton Community Foundation is embarking on a new project that we are calling, “The Legacy Memoirs”. This is a collection of stories about the lives of our donors that will eventually be displayed in a book as well as online. We will make two copies of the book; one for our office and one to be displayed publicly, at a yet to be determined location.
Why are we doing this? There are a few reasons. First and foremost, this is a way to recognize our donors in a way that is very personal to the donor. It gives the donor the opportunity to tell his or her story and for that story to have a place, forever, in our book. It is an extension of the legacy of the gift, creating a legacy memoir of the donor.
It is also a great gift to the community. The Legacy Memoirs will be a real piece of our history that will be available to our community over the coming generations. There is real value in understanding the lives of those people who have given so freely to make our community a better place.
In addition to the historical value, The Legacy Memoirs will inspire others in our community to be philanthropic and to give of their time, talent and treasure to the causes that matter to them, whether through the Fredericton Community Foundation or other avenues of support.
Only good can come from donors telling their stories and sharing their lives with their community. When people understand the donor behind the gift, the funds become more “real” in the minds of the public. It helps them understand what the Fredericton Community Foundation is and how we help donors connect with good causes.
We are asking our donors to be a part of The Legacy Memoirs. If you have created a fund with us, are a long-standing monthly or regular annual donor, have given a major gift, have made us as a beneficiary in an insurance policy or have decided to include us in your will, we would like to write YOUR story. Not only is it our gift to you to say thank you for your generosity, but it is yet another gift that you can make to your community, inspiring the good that is in each one of us.
Please call or email me (email@example.com) to let me know if we can add your story to The Legacy Memoirs.
If you agree, I will contact you to set up a meeting and to interview you. I will plan to attend the interview personally (unless you would prefer that I do not), although we will have someone else actually perform the interview and write your story. In fact, we are working closely with the Journalism and Communications Departments at St. Thomas University to provide an opportunity for a senior student to take on this role.
Stories will be relatively short, keeping to about 1,000 words or so. We will not release the initial “book” until we have 25 stories. We hope that one of those stories will be yours!
The concept for The Legacy Memoirs came from the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. They have been very helpful in sharing the concept with us and encouraging us to build our own book of legacies. I would encourage you to have a look at the stories in the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba’s Endowment Book of Life to glean an understanding of our own project, as the stories will be similar in content and length.
If you have any questions whatsoever, please contact me directly. You may also wish to refer to The Legacy Memoirs – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for additional details.
Thank you for supporting your community. Thank you for your gifts to the Fredericton Community Foundation.
