Come the New Year, all Canadians will begin the celebration of the 150th anniversary of our nation. It will be a time to reflect on the past and make plans for our future.
What I am most proud of as a Canadian is our legacy of looking after one another. We value hard work and believe in the individual’s right to succeed and prosper, yet we have an undeniable understanding of fairness and a compassion for those who have struggles in their lives.
In Fredericton, this is even more pronounced. We give about $100 more per year in charitable donations than other Canadians. That says something about the generosity and kindness of our community.
We were one of the first places in Canada to have a community foundation to support the needs of our citizens. We celebrate Random Act of Kindness Day with huge success and increasing community involvement. And, when there is a tragedy in our midst, we rally behind those who are affected and come to their support.
Yet, we still have homeless living on our streets, children who don’t have enough to eat, adults who cannot read, people with mental illness who don’t have access to the services they need. We still have a need for arts and cultural programs to enrich our lives, camps for at-risk kids, and yes, even for a way to look after our feral cat population.
So, while we would all agree that we live in a wonderful community, there will always be a role for more kindness, more love, more charity and more hope.
I’m asking you to consider all that you love about our community and to think about what your legacy will be. How will you help to shape the next 150 years for Canadians? Will you leave a legacy that will live on, doing good for the community and the causes that you love, long after you’re gone?
If you would like to explore your own legacy, give me a call or email me at email@example.com. Together, we’ll talk about the causes that matter to you and help you to establish an endowment fund in your name, or any name you wish, that will support the community in whatever way you wish.
If you want to support general grants to charities doing great work in our community, we can set that up. If you want to support a specific charity forever, we can set that up. If you want to establish a scholarship or bursary, we can do that too! If you want to support a field of interest (education, youth, environment, arts, etc.) we can even do that!
It’s YOUR LEGACY! We’re here to give you the means to create it, custom fitted, just for you. So whether you’re 82 years old with accumulated wealth that is beyond your current need or 32 years old with a more limited disposable income, we can help you set up your legacy today; a legacy that will last forever!
You can explore some of the options for a fund here, but remember, we’re very accommodating, so talk to us to see how we can help you to help others.
May your New Year and the 150th anniversary of our great nation, be a special one for you and for everyone in our community.
With warmest regards,
Fredericton Community Foundation
