Meet Our 2023 Community Grant Recipients

Spring is here, and we're excited to provide our annual Community Grants to charitable organizations. These grants are all about supporting projects that address immediate needs in our community. We're happy to announce that this year, a total of $156,360 has been granted to 42 projects from charitable organizations, all dedicated to building A Better Community for All in the greater Fredericton region.

These grants are awarded to projects that directly meet immediate community needs and fall into our six community investment areas:

Charlotte Street Arts Centre: ArtReach (Girls+ Rock Camp, Faster Than Light, Fest Forward)

The ArtReach program is focused around providing high-quality, professionally-led, art-based programming to members of the community, with a strong emphasis on serving traditionally underserved communities. This program is offered free of charge or at a very minimal fee, ensuring accessibility for all who can benefit the most. Grant Awarded: $4,000 | Arts, Culture, and Heritage

CISV Fredericton Chapter: CISV Sustainable U Youth Meeting

The Sustainable U Youth Meeting gathers 35 youth, aged 12-13, from five different countries at the scenic Yoho Lake Scout Camp. Organized by CISV Fredericton and guided by adult staff and leaders representing each visiting country, this event fosters meaningful learning experiences centered around the theme of sustainability. These meetings will not only endure but also leave a lasting impact, as participants forge friendships that will stand the test of time. Grant Awarded: $3,500 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

Feed the Lions: Backpack Program

The Backpack program provides a range of breakfast and lunch options and operates a backpack room. Students can fill bags with groceries to take home, recognizing that food security is a school student's concern; it often extends to their home life. Fredericton Community Kitchens Inc: Grab & Go Breakfast Program

This program aims to benefit participants by offering a range of nutritious breakfast items they can quickly grab on their way to school. Additionally, it strives to foster community connections and strengthen bonds among individuals involved. Grant Awarded: $5,000 | Food Security, Housing, and Economy

Fredericton Heritage Trust Inc: Heritage Inventory & Mapping Project

This project aims to identify, coordinate, and enhance the existing inventories of heritage buildings and sites in Fredericton. To provide easy access to information, user-friendly online and physical maps will be developed for heritage practitioners and the public. These maps will serve as valuable research and analysis references, benefiting heritage enthusiasts and the wider community. Grant Awarded: $2,000 | Arts, Culture, and Heritage

Fredericton Playhouse Inc: InterMISSION

The InterMISSION residency program is designed to empower local artists by nurturing their creativity and supporting their innovative practices. With mentorship, access to professional facilities, and ongoing support, artists can explore new frontiers in their craft. Their technical staff, specializing in theatrical lighting, sound, and multi-media arts, are there every step of the way to help artists bring their vision to life. Fredericton Society of St. Andrew Pipe Band: Drums for FSSAPB

New drums benefit both current and new members. Up-to-date equipment ensures an enjoyable experience and promotes retention. Early access to drums boosts enthusiasm and commitment to learning. Participants play and learn to tune and care for the instruments, teaching responsibility and respect. Grant Awarded: $5,800 | Arts, Culture, and Heritage

Fredericton Therapeutic Riding Association: Saturday Therapeutic Rides

This organization provides riders with weekly 45-minute sessions where they connect with therapy horses through petting, grooming, leading, and therapeutic riding. Due to high demand, they've recently introduced a new Saturday program alongside our Tuesday night rides. Grant Awarded: $4,100 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

Frontier College: United for Literacy Student Success Program in Fredericton

The program offers free, year-long extracurricular literacy support to help children and youth in Fredericton excel in school and unleash their potential. Through collaboration with community partners and dedicated volunteers, the program reaches out to under-served communities, including public housing neighborhoods, where access to extracurricular support may be limited. Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival Inc: Summer Concert Series at the Tannery

The Tannery Series is a vibrant outdoor music series held in downtown Fredericton from May to September. With the beautiful weather as its backdrop, this open-air series is a collaborative effort between local organizations and downtown businesses, bringing the joy of live music to the heart of the Fredericton community. Hospice Fredericton: Day Hospice Program

Hospice House Fredericton proudly presents its inaugural Day Hospice Program. Designed for individuals diagnosed with a terminal illness seeking a rejuvenating day away, this program offers a welcoming and homely environment. It also provides a unique opportunity to relax, engage, and connect with others on a similar life journey, fostering a supportive and uplifting experience. Jeunesses Musicales du Canada: Promotion/Production of workshops/concerts of classical music for young children

This program is dedicated to nurturing young audiences' love for classical music. Through a captivating blend of live and digital experiences, it will offer educational tools and entertaining musical activities. The mission is to make classical music accessible and engaging, inspiring a new generation of music enthusiasts Grant Awarded: $2,000 | Arts, Culture, and Heritage

Kidney of Canada: Short-term Financial Assistance, Focus on Food Security and Transportation

The Kidney Foundation, Atlantic Branch's Program Officer, works closely with renal social workers to immediately support kidney patients in Fredericton and surrounding communities. Through the distribution of grocery and gas cards, they address food insecurity and offer short-term financial assistance during vulnerable times. Thanks to these cards, they will ensure kidney patients, who often have restrictive diets, have access to essential resources when local food banks may not meet their dietary needs. L'Arche Fredericton Inc: L'Arche Fredericton "Together for All Seasons"

This vibrant program brings joy and connection to adults with intellectual disabilities (core members) and their friends! This inclusive initiative creates a space where they can gather and indulge in various delightful activities. Grant Awarded: $3,550 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

L'Arche Fredericton Inc: L'Arche Fredericton Learning Kitchen

This culinary adventure is where participants discover the joy of preparing wholesome meals from scratch, with a focus on seasonal ingredients. Participants can learn essential food preparation skills while gaining valuable knowledge about the benefits of healthy eating. Grant Awarded: $2,800 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

Leg Up Programme un, deux, trois, hop!: Expanding Summer Riding Program

The Summer Riding Program empowers youth in the capital region by offering twelve riding lessons guided by a certified coach of their choosing. Participants receive a certified riding helmet, boots, gloves, and a Junior New Brunswick Equestrian Association membership to ensure their safety and comfort. MADD Canada-Mothers Against Drunk Driving: MADD Canada's 2023-24 School Program

Eighty schools across New Brunswick, including Fredericton, join forces to reach out to 500 youth. Through a captivating video, MADD Canada will shed light on the profound impact of impaired driving and advocate for safer alternatives. Grant Awarded: $3,600 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

Multicultural Association of Fredericton Inc: Cultural Expressions Festival 2023

The Cultural Expressions Festival (CEF) presents multicultural activities throughout June. From engaging in-person events to captivating online experiences, CEF will offer diverse offerings such as the Living Library, an enlightening Anti-racism Discussion Panel, the rhythmic Drumming Circle, inspiring Art workshops, and more. Musical Ventures Inc: New Brunswick Summer Music Festival, 30th Anniversary Celebration

This season, NBSMF brings classical music to Fredericton's most popular locations. With four ticketed concerts, three free community concerts, and a special free public concert celebrating Fredericton's 175th anniversary, there's something for everyone. Nashwaak Valley Elementary School Home & School: NVS playground improvement

The project at Nashwaak Valley School in Durham aims to enhance the outdoor playground with a Gaga ball pit and an adjustable basketball hoop system. Currently lacking any new equipment for the past 20 years, this addition will benefit the students and staff by promoting physical activity and emotional well-being. The equipment will be accessible during school hours and open to the public outside of school hours. Grant Awarded: $2,000 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

NB COPES LTD: Camp COPES for Grieving Youth

The retreats, led by compassionate therapists experienced in supporting grieving children and youth, will provide a safe space for healing. With the valuable support of peer mentors who have also experienced grief and loss, the youth will receive guidance and understanding throughout the retreat. The mentors will actively contribute to the retreat's design and implementation, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness. Grant Awarded: $4,800 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

New Brunswick Choral Federation: Fredericton Kiwanis Youth Choir

The program aims to allow young people to learn and perform choral music in a supportive and professional environment. It strives to make membership accessible and affordable for all children who wish to participate. Additionally, the program ensures that the hired musical professionals are compensated fairly for their expertise. Grant Awarded: $3,800 | Arts, Culture, and Heritage

OPAL III, Fredericton Respite Services Inc: Camp Wonder 2023

Camp Wonder is a special day camp that welcomes children and youth with disabilities along with their neurotypical peers. What sets Camp Wonder apart is our dedicated support, with a staff-to-camper ratio of 1:1 for those who need it. This ensures inclusive programming and valuable respite for families. Another highlight of Camp Wonder is our exciting community outings, which add to the fun and adventure of the camp experience. Grant Awarded: $7,500 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

Oromocto and Area SPCA: Yelp for Help Surgery fund

Animals at the shelter face numerous challenges, including costly medical procedures. Even with generous discounts from local veterinarians, surgeries for injured animals can cost thousands of dollars per case. The shelter provides care for animals from Oromocto and the surrounding areas, including rural pets from Fredericton Animal Control when the Fredericton SPCA Shelter reaches capacity. Partners for Youth Inc: Camp Tippy Canoe

The summer camp provides a unique adventure-based out-tripping experience in the New Brunswick wilderness for at-risk youth. It allows them to explore and engage with nature in a supportive and enriching environment. Grant Awarded: $3,000 | Environment and Animal Welfare

Roots of Empathy: Roots of Empathy, Laying the Foundation for Mental Health in New Brunswick

The Roots of Empathy (ROE) program aims to foster empathy in children and adults, promoting caring, peaceful, and civil societies. By developing empathy skills, ROE strives to break intergenerational cycles of violence and prepare children for compassionate leadership, responsible citizenship, and nurturing parenting, all contributing to positive mental health. Grant Awarded: $3,800 | Literacy and Education

Solo Chicken Productions Inc: The Spirit Project, Taking Root

In collaboration with L'Arche Fredericton and the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, Solo Chicken is seeking support for the next chapter of The Spirit Project, called TAKING ROOT. This project brings together artists with and without disabilities to explore and enhance their musical theatre skills through a year-long interdisciplinary training program. The Chalmers Foundation Inc: Pediatric Adapted Aquatics Assessment Program, Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation

This program offers children with special needs the chance to enjoy the freedom of swimming and playing independently in the water. Grant Awarded: $7,500 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

The Corporation of the Anglican Parish of St. Mary, York: Growing the St. Mary's Community Food Forest

This year's projects involve setting up raised beds for growing vegetables and adding perennial vegetable plantings alongside fruit trees. These initiatives will enhance our ability to provide fresh, local food for anyone to harvest based on their needs. Grant Awarded: $1,250 | Environment and Animal Welfare

Town of Nackawic, Nackawic Area Wellness (NAW): Seniors' Initiatives for a Thriving Rural Community

Twice a month, the Town of Nackawic provide friendly lunchtime meals through our senior-driven program. Additionally, Wheels to Wellness offers transportation services for local appointments, services, and personal needs, ensuring seniors have the support they need. Grant Awarded: $3,500 | Food Security, Housing, and Economy

UNB Art Centre: Design Works Camp Scholarship

These camps are all about fostering art-based skills in youth, while also nurturing their creativity, visual literacy, and teamwork abilities. They understand that these learning opportunities are valuable for all children. That's why this program aims to create a scholarship fund, enabling children from differents backgrounds to attend Design Works Camps and experience the joy of artistic exploration. YMCA of Fredericton: Adapted Aquatic Swim

The YMCA of Fredericton offers the city's only accessible therapeutic pool. However, because the current schedule for Adapted Aquatic Swim time may not meet the needs of all participants, they are excited to embark on a project that will provide additional dedicated adapted swim times each week. Along with that, they will introduce a range of adaptive equipment to enhance the participant experience. Grant Awarded: $2,160 | Health, Wellness, and Recreation

Fredericton Homeless Shelters: Essential Skills

Through this program, individuals have the opportunity to work with a dedicated Life Skills Support Worker. Together, they focus on learning essential life skills and building upon personal strengths. The goal is to ensure that participants have the necessary skills and confidence to thrive in independent housing. Grant Awarded: $4,000 | Food Security, Housing, and Economy
