Setting the Stage - Madeline Savoie

Madeline Savoie of Fredericton has been selected to receive the Council of the Arts Fredericton Performing Arts Scholarship for 2021.  The award is valued at $5000.

Madeline Savoie is a playwright, actor, musician, and recent graduate of École Sainte-Anne. Her plays have been featured in the NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival (Out of Water, Graffiti, Limbo) and the Plain Site Theatre Festival (Out of Water). She has acted with several local theatre groups including Theatre New Brunswick (Beauty and the Beast, The Wizard of Oz), the Calithumpians, Impulse Productions (Matilda), and St. Thomas University’s Propel Festival (Knock). Madeline will be attending Concordia University in the fall and will be pursuing a BFA with a specialization in Performance Creation. In her free time, she enjoys biking with a podcast in her earbuds, and trying to make a perfect fettucine alfredo.

Council of the Arts Fredericton presented quality performances to Fredericton audiences from 1978 until 2006 through its ONSTAGE and KIDSTAGE programs and encouraged young people in their study of the performing arts through awards and scholarships.  The Performing  Arts  Scholarship was created in June 2007 and has been managed through a designated fund agreement with the Fredericton Community Foundation.  Since 2007, fifteen students from a variety of disciplines including acting, music, vocal performance and sound recording have been awarded the scholarship. 2021 is the final year the Council of the Arts Fredericton Scholarship will be awarded.

“It's a great honour to be the recipient of the scholarship and it’s wonderful to see the performing arts recognized and supported.” said Madeline Savoie. “Moving to a new city brings many anxieties, so the scholarship has certainly helped to take the financial pressure off.”

In the fourteen years since the creation of the Preforming Arts Scholarship, the Fredericton Community Foundation has been able to provide $75,000 in funding to fifteen students, through the original endowment fund of $58,000 donated by the Council of the Arts Fredericton. Over the years, this funding was used to help give back to the youth in the community and encourage students to pursue studies in the preforming arts. Endowment funds act as a perpetual gift by using a portion of the endowment income each year, which allows for growth and longevity of the donation.

We wish to thank our many donors whose generous donations make these annual scholarships and bursaries possible. To learn more, please visit www.fredfdn.ca or contact our office.
