2019 Fall Granting Session Recipients

General community grants represent the bulk of our funding to local charities and organizations. These grants are awarded twice per year and are usually in the amount of $500 – $5,000. In the fall of 2019, we granted a little over $80,000 in the greater Fredericton region with use of our community grants. The grants given in this session are from our Community Fund, unless otherwise stated. Our focus of this money is on charities that deliver resource, programming or opportunities in one or more of the following areas: Arts & Culture, Heritage, Youth, Environment, Health & Wellness, Education, Athletics, & Social Development. Ability New Brunswick Inc.

This grant will be used to expand Ability New Brunswick’s adapted recreation equipment pool. By purchasing an additional adapted trike, New Brunswicker’s with limited leg strength will be able to explore New Brunswick’s extensive trail system. Adapted recreation equipment provides not only physical benefits though exercise, but psychosocial benefits as well. In a few short years, many users of our trikes were able to ride alongside their peers and/or family members on New Brunswick trails, school property, and retirement facilities. Having this piece of equipment in the Equipment Loan Service has enabled and empowered participants young and old to experience numerous “first-times” as part of our “Everyone Plays!” campaign.

Autism Connections Fredericton

This grant will enable Autism Connections to offer a tutoring program which caters to students on the autism spectrum. This innovative project will be the first Autism specific tutoring program available in New Brunswick. Autism Connections will partner with students from the UNB Applied Behavioural Analysis program to work one-on-one with a student to achieve their academic goals.

Boys & Girls Club of Fredericton

This grant is to support the Academic Outreach and Support programs in schools through the Boys and Girls Club tutoring and mentoring program - Raise the Grade. Programming is delivered at Devon Middle School, Nashwaaksis Middle School and Leo Hayes High-School. This program is a compliment to the Boys and Girls Club’s larger program that provides these services to children in their after-school program as well as children and youth in their evening program offered at Club. The entire program involves a number of programs and services that are provided to elementary, middle-school, high-school youth who are in need of academic support and at risk of not moving forward in their studies or dropping out of school.

CHIMO Helpline

Chimo Helpline received two grants during this session. The first is to support the work of the Fredericton Regional Resource Network, a group of community members who all have a vested interest in seeing results and putting an end to violence against women. The funding will support the network’s training in trauma stewardship focusing on vicarious trauma, burnout and compassion fatigue in order to learn skills and strategies to help them better care for themselves while they care for others.

Amount Received: $600

The second grant will support Chimo Helpline’s Live Chat. This project provides a communication tool which allows for a wider demographic to access social-emotional support and suicide intervention. Live chat builds a safe online space for people to meaningfully express themselves through writing while further protecting their anonymity.

CISV Fredericton Chapter

This grant will support Sustainable U Youth Meeting. The program will bring 35 youth aged 12-13 years old together from different countries to Yoho Lake Scout Camp in August 2020. The camp will be coordinated by CISV Fredericton and facilitated by adult staff and leaders from each visiting country. A Youth Meeting creates a safe, fun setting where participants will learn about each other’s lives and cultures including how to communicate, cooperate and live together. The Youth Meeting provides learning experiences on the theme of sustainability, and the friendships made will last a lifetime. Based on the sustainability theme, CISV Fredericton’s Sustainable U camp will include activities that will expand their awareness of sustainable development and will encourage them to think about how they can use the skills and learnings they have gained to help make a positive impact in their own communities.

Ducks unlimited Canada

This project will focus on creating educational materials at the Fredericton Ducks Unlimited Conservation Centre to provide more information for the general public and program participants, as well as providing five classes from a Fredericton Area school with a wetland field trip experience, including educational resources and a hands-on learning experience at a local wetland.

Fredericton Botanic Garden

This grant is to support the creation of the Wabanaki People’s Indigenous Garden. The Healing Garden will be comprised of planted garden beds, semi-natural plantings in a forested section, wheelchair-accessible pathways, benches, and informational signage. Plantings will include both native and cultivated species that have been used by indigenous people as either medicine or food or both. Signage (and online supplemental resources) will educate visitors about the plants, purposes and cultural importance to Indigenous life and culture.

Fredericton homeless Shelters Inc.

This is grant is support the ever-evolving work of the Fredericton Homeless Shelter. Each day they learn of new barriers and services that can help support and advance their clients in their journey. The Shelters work with a Continuum of Care Model which works to supplement their resources by also bringing tailored and personalized mental health support and access to additional resources directly to our residents. The Mental Health Wellness Coaches who meet with their residents on a weekly basis help to remove the stigma attached to asking for help, as well as recognizes that everyone experiencing homelessness can benefit from having an ally to help them access the services that they would benefit from most.

Fredericton Residential Youth Services

Fredericton Residential Youth Services currently operate five residential programs throughout Fredericton, and can accommodate up to 21 children in care at any given time. We strive to provide a safe, nurturing, protective, and therapeutic environment to some of the most vulnerable children in our community. With an ever growing population of youth in need and a growing staff, this grant will support professional development for staff at Fredericton Residential Youth Services to ensure the wellbeing of their staff and youth.

Fredericton Society of SAint Andrews Pipe Band

This grant is to support the Renewed Heritage project by procuring new tenor drum harnesses and drum sticks for the tenor drummers of the Fredericton Society of Saint Andrew Pipe Band.

Amount received: $1,500

 

Fredericton Trails Coalition

With the increase in use of the Fredericton Trail System over the the past years for daily commutes, the grant will provide stand-alone dusk to dawn illumination for Trans Canada Trail Pavilion area thereby improving trail accessibility in low-light conditions 24/7 year-round for all trail users.

Hope Air

Hope Air provides travel expense support for medical reason to families throughout Canada. This grant will support medical care access flights in and out of Fredericton.

Hospice Fredericton

This grant will support the purchase of improved patient beds at Hospice Fredericton which will reduce the occurrence of bed sores, the need for turning or re-adjusting the patient, muscle tension, and will promote increased blood flow and circulation.

Jeunesse musicales du Canada - Fredericton

This grant will offer artist hosted workshops in schools and opportunities for young local artists to perform at the beginning of concerts as a recognition and reward as well as an enticement to the young artist and accompanying adult to attend Jeunesse Musicales du Canada - Fredericton (JMC) concerts. JMC offers year-round, Young Audiences Musical Discovery workshops to day care centers for children ages 3 to 12 which are led by local workshop leaders trained by JMC. Their center partially covers the costs of such workshops to help day cares access this service, depending on our financial resources.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

This grant will go towards providing families in Fredericton who have been recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes the emotional support and resources to cope with their diagnosis. The program will provide families with “Bags of Hope” filled with a variety of educational and reference materials including a guide about growing up with diabetes, information on blood glucose monitoring and a nutrition wheel. Juvenile Diabetes will also provide mentorship and peer support to families living with Type 1 Diabetes and empowerment programs for youth.

l’arche fredericton

This grant is for the continued support of the L’Arche Community Hub. The Community Hub fosters a sense of community living and belonging for everyone. The Hub was started in May 2018 and provides an opportunity for individuals with an intellectual disability to develop friendships while promoting independence. This grant will also support their shared suppers, where they see many children attending with their families and becoming comfortable around individuals with disabilities.

Learning Disabilities Association of New Brunswick

This grant will support the Barton Tutoring Program. This is a specialized one-on-one tutoring program based on the Orton-Gillingham method that teaches the phonemic structure of our written language using a multi-sensory approach. This method of learning and structured literacy program is ideal for students with learning disabilities; in particular dyslexia and dysgraphia. In order to meet the increasing demand, this grant will provide funding to digitize the Barton Tutoring Program with the purchase of the Barton Tiles App and tablets.

Nashwaak Villa

Nashwaak Villa has a completely revitalized patient care in New Brunswick through their continued training in person centered care. As part of their next steps, this grant will support a full-day “Care for the Caregiver” retreat which all staff will have the opportunity to take part in. This will equip their staff with the tools they need to cope with the mental health challenges and fatigue that accompanies working in a vibrant person centered care environment.

New Brunswick Youth Orchestra - Sistema

Sistema NB is the highly successful program of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra. Launched in 2009, Sistema NB is a social program which utilizes music and the orchestra to foster a sense of belonging and empower for children and youth who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in such programming. This grant will support the Sistema program at Gibson Neill Elementary School.

Opal Family Services

This grant is to support the new Opal's Kids Club program. This program will provide respite care and after-school programming that meets the social, emotional and educational needs of children in Fredericton. Opal has partnered with social work students from St. Thomas University to help support this after-school program.

Relay Education

This grant will support education programs in schools throughout Fredericton and teach youth in grades four to seven about renewable energy sources. These workshops will provide youth with hands-on experience through the demonstration wind turbines, solar panels, and chemistry equipment. Each workshop begins with a short presentation on the environmental impacts of energy generation and the difference in impact between renewable and non-renewable generation

The John Howard Society of Fredericton

This grant will support the purchase of additional technology and equipment to enable the John Howard Society to engage and educate adults and Youth in need of soft skill development, workplace related training and certification, homelessness statistical tracking and GED training.

YMCA of Fredericton

This grant will support the YMCA Strong Kids program. Strong Kids is about accessibility to the Y, for those in need, through Membership and Camp Scholarship Assistance. This means giving a family a place to get learn to get active with a Health and Fitness membership, helping a child learn to swim, or providing children with the chance to experience the magic of YMCA day camp!
